Some people might consider Audiobooks “not really reading,” but I’m here to tell you the opposite. Not only are audiobooks “real reading,” they are crucial to your child’s reading journey. Here are some of the top assets of audiobooks for your child.
Increased Vocabulary
As a dyslexic child continues on their reading journey, they are often reading at a comprehension level that is years behind their peers. This can result in a loss of vocabulary that the dyslexic child otherwise would have learned. Luckily there is an easy solution to this problem. Audiobooks! Dyslexic kids can listen their way to an amazing vocabulary.
Story Enjoyment
Dyslexic kids often struggle to enjoy reading. The process can be so slow and laborious that comprehension lags and enjoyment wavers. Dyslexic kids deserve to enjoy a great story just as much as the next kid. Audiobooks open the world of stories to your child. They allow a dyslexic reader to sit back, relax, and just enjoy.
Independence
It can be very frustrating for a dyslexic child when classmates are carrying around books and reading them independently. This can lead to lowered self-esteem, and frustration. Many dyslexic kids get frustrated at having to read “baby books” when their peers are reading more interesting ones. These kids often get frustrated at always needing help to read a story on a higher reading level. While I always recommend continuing to read to your child at home, audiobooks will give your child that feeling of independence that they crave. They can read that new book everyone is talking about all on their own!
Speed of Information Download
As your child continues in school, they are asked to take in more and more information. It can be truly exhausting for our dyslexic kiddos. With audiobooks, your child can take in the info much more quickly. They can even slowly start to increase the speed of the audio on their audiobook. One of my favorite books about dyslexia is “The Dyslexia Empowerment Plan” by Ben Foss. He is a Dyslexic Learner that made it through law school by listening to as much as he could through audio at increased speeds. This tool is an essential one for our dyslexic learners.
As you can see, Audiobooks are incredibly important for our dyslexic kids. Keep an eye out for an upcoming article about the least expensive ways to get audiobooks. Coming soon!
